「デイリー・クリーム」という小さなアイスクリーム会社で工場長を務める
ピーターは、人気スーパーマーケットの「ナチュラル・フーズ」に体当たり
の営業に飛び込むところから、この物語は始まります。
「ナチュラル・フーズ」の店長マイクは、「デイリー・クリーム」のアイス
を仕入れない理由を尋ねられ、こう答えています。
『きみの会社の場合、はたして品質が“売り”なんだろうか？
社内の努力をすべて品質向上に向けているだろうか？』
こうして、マイクの指導を仰ぎながら、ピーターは「デイリー・クリーム」
の建て直しに着手するのです。
まず、「質の高さ」の土台は「部下を大切にすること」とマイクは説きます。
部下に責任を与えて、ビジネスの大事な一部分として扱えば、それにふさわ
しい反応が返ってくる。
そして部下を大切にすればするほど、部下たちは例外なく、客を大切にする
ようになる、と。
この「質の高さ」を企業文化として根づかせるのが「ＬＥＯ」です。
Liten（聞く）、Enrich（価値を高める）、Optimize（最適化する）の頭文字
であり、客の声をよく聞く、製品やサービスを強化する、客が完全に満足で
きるように最適化する。
これらを丁寧に実行したピーターの下で、「デイリー・クリーム」は徐々に
変化を遂げていくのです。
本書のテーマである「品質」について、最初にマイクが語った言葉が印象的
です。
『“品質重視”はアメリカ社会のDNAに組み込まれていない。しかし、日本企
業のDNAには組み込まれている。最近は韓国の企業のDNAにも組み込まれつ
つある。だから、アメリカ企業がつねに新製品を作り、新市場を切り開く
のに、結局はよその国に負けてしまう』
デイリー・クリームと同じお菓子製造の、老舗の日本企業で起きた不祥事を
目の当たりにすると、果たして日本企業のDNAには、本当に「品質重視」が組
み込まれているのか、不安になります。
「シックス・シグマ」の著者として有名な筆者による、この読みやすい物語
から、今、我々は「品質」の意義を学ばねばなりません。

業務を最適化するためには、「失敗の代償」を認識することが重要だ。
もし失敗したならば、どれだけ悲惨な状態になり、お金が無駄になるかを考
えれば、失敗なんかできないぞと死にもの狂いになれる。
スペースシャトル「チャレンジャー号」を思い出すといい。
アメリカきっての優秀な人材が莫大な時間を費やし、２０億ドルの資金を使
って、あのスペースシャトルを完成させた。
ところが、たった900ドルのＯリングが不良品だったせいで、７人の宇宙飛行
士の命を含め、すべてを失った。
エンジニアが事前に警告したのに、改良には費用がかかりすぎるという懸念
から、無視された。
しかし結局、「チャレンジャー号」の事故の原因調査と部品回収だけで５億
ドルかかった。
Ｏリングが50万個以上買える金額だ。

Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is important and all. With havin so much content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement? I was wondering if you ever considered changing the structure of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
